Invoices in English for Bulgarian companies

Updated:

A client abroad expects an invoice they can read. Your bookkeeping in Bulgaria, however, works with documents in Bulgarian. A bilingual invoice meets both needs at once.

Can an invoice be in English only?

Bulgarian accounting law requires documents in Bulgarian. A document written only in a foreign language must come with a translation, so an English-only invoice means extra work for you and your accountant.

A bilingual invoice carries every detail in both languages in a single document. Your client understands what they pay for, and the document is valid for Bulgarian bookkeeping without a separate translation.

Are names and addresses translated?

A company name is not translated but transliterated as registered – “Д-Матрикс ЕООД” becomes “D-Matrix EOOD”, or “D-Matrix Ltd.” if the company uses that name. Addresses are transliterated too: “ул. Шипка 12, София” becomes “12 Shipka St., Sofia”.
